On Thursday, September 14, we return to the axis of devotion explored in last month’s full moon. This time, the moon and sun meet in Virgo, opposite Neptune in Pisces.
Pisces and Virgo are opposites and yet two sides of the same coin. If Pisces is meditation, then Virgo, an earth sign associated with the body, is yoga.
If you’ve learned astrology from memes, you may think of Virgo as the analyst and perfectionist. You might know (or be) a Virgo sun who fits the rep.
To step away from stereotypes, I like to take signs down to their element and mode. Virgo’s element is earth, and its mode is mutable, meaning it marks the end of a season, and evolves or mutates into the next season. There’s some delightful contrast here, because “earth” as an element is solid and tangible, but with Virgo, it’s experiencing change.
Virgo brings some practicality to dreaming. If Pisces is a poet, then Virgo is a sculptor, and has to go out and buy some clay before it can get started. The art needs to hold itself together in the 3D world.
The opposition to Neptune in this new moon can challenge this week’s new ideas. It’s tempting to fall into overthinking, anxiety, or escapism, especially if the new journey seems beyond reach.
I’ve drawn some green lines on the chart below to highlight an aspect pattern: the kite. Pluto (rebirth) and Uranus (rebellion) both make a trine to the new moon. This forms a grand trine of all three points in earth signs, and with Neptune’s opposition, it becomes a kite. It’s cute, right?
I like the kite because it takes the harmonious grand trine and adds a little pizzazz. Oppositions can make for a lot of frustration and tension, especially in a birth chart, but this opposition within the grand trine is able to ride the wind.
Less than a day after this new moon, Mercury, which has been retrograde since August 23, will go direct. Mercury is in Virgo, so it’s been messing with whatever themes this new moon is bringing fresh energy to.
Virgo is in my 10th house of career and reputation. I’m working on a writing project, and was flying through it — but a few days into Mercury Rx, I pushed myself too hard and my body forced me to pause on everything. The forward motion had to be sacrificed while I reset routines and support systems to avoid burnout.
My intentions for this moon are to optimize for longevity, rather than urgency. A well-built kite just leans into the wind—it doesn’t need rocket fuel to fly.
Where could you use some kite energy in your life?
